Blake Lively stars in this already failed female assassin franchise starter from the Bond producers. Imagine a mix of Anna, Red Sparrow and Killing Eve ifd it was incredibly po-faced. The last comparison is especially ironic since the Phoebe Waller-Bridge script involvement on No Time to Die has been a big element of that film’s development. Livery’s central performance is very committed but beyond some decent action scenes the film just doesn’t know what its audience is. It’s far too slow and morose for action junkies but far too basic for pretty much everyone else. Director Reed Morano is clearly no slouch having worked on season 1 of The Handmaid’s Tale (easily its best) but I spent most of the film wishing the film had the level of emotional resonance and impact that went into crafting Gilead on screen.
